We will continue the ELD MOOC with two assignments, an individual assignment and a team assignment.
To start with, please read the ELD_MOOC_2.0_course_script_Week_3 by Emmanuelle Quillérou with contributions from Thomas Falk.
1) The individual assignment: Help us map the world!
This assignment is very similar to the one in Assignment 1. Previously, you added a brief statement about the land, its region, ecosystem services and other information. This time we will expand the world map to include specific information about international, supranational, and national stakeholders related to the land you have chosen. This will give background about different stakeholders in different parts of the world. Please go to the world map and click an “Add your Stakeholder Marker”.
- Name: Same under your chosen land and related to the country where your land is located.
- Description: Write a brief statement about the stakeholders that are related to your land. (E.g. their role, regulations, and policy context).
This assignment will receive general feedback.
The assignment is due at end of Week 4
2) The team assignment
At the end of Assignment 1, teams have been created and case studies were selected for MOOC work afterword. In the coming two weeks, you will identify the stakeholders that will be involved in your Stakeholder Engagement Plan through utilizing a wide variety of tools and approaches used for stakeholder analysis. In order to identify stakeholders, it is necessary to consider all people, or groups, that are affected by, who can influence, or may have an interest in the project and what motivate them to become involved. This assignment is due at the end of week 4.
Five major steps are needed to complete this assignment. The Worksheet__team assignment_2 will guide you through the process. Here is how to proceed:
2.1 Identify: First, start by identifying the main stakeholders in relation to your land management issues. A quick example, the main types of stakeholders in relation to land management identified by the ELD Initiative are:
- Government i.e. political decision makers, including national (ministries, national agencies) and sub-national government authorities and agencies;
- Private businesses, including multinationals and other big corporations, small and medium enterprises, farmers and smallholders;
- Civil Society: international development and environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs), local communities and civil society bodies, professional groups
2.2 Categorize: Then, it is important to differentiate the identified stakeholders and to categories them. As you walk through Week 3 Script, there are different methods that can help you carry out this task. Main approaches related to Stakeholder analysis are:
- Interest-influence matrices
- Radical trans-activeness
- Stakeholder-led stakeholder categorization
- Q methodology
Please, note that in your assignment, state clearly and discuss why you choose a particular Categorizing method.
2.3 Map: Once the identified stakeholders were categorized, it is significant to represent visually your different stakeholders. Several methodologies such as the 4Rs and Venn Diagrams can be found in the Week 3 script. Other relevant methods you find suitable are ok to apply.
2.4 Relationship: Moving forward, relationships among the identified stakeholders need to be investigated and cleared where you seek information about stakeholder’s relationships with other stakeholders in conjunctions to their interest in the land. This step will help you lining up the interrelations among the stakeholders and understanding their role through your MOOC work. Some of the tools that help you walk through this task are:
- Actor-linkage matrices
- Social Network Analysis
- Knowledge Mapping
2.5 Prioritize: Lastly, it is necessary to assess and analyze stakeholders in order to prioritize them towards successful engagement of stakeholders later on. Not every stakeholder or stakeholder group needs to be involved to the same degree, or at the same time and the same stakeholder may be of differing relevance at different stages of the research or when working with another group. You can use the interest-influence matrix that was established in 2.2 as stakeholder influence mapping to prioritize them according to their importance to, and influence over the MOOC work.
The team assignment is due at the end of week 4.The assignment will be submitted in your team. In each team you will be able to start a new document. Please prepare your assignment using the document function. You may add your own files to the document. At the end of week 4, you will be able to submit a document.
Please note: Once you are ready to submit your document, please make sure that EACH TEAM MEMBER presses the SUBMIT Button. Only then, the submission counts towards the individual team member.
Once your assignment is finished, please use the form below to submit it.
